(From Manila Standard)
WE DO not begrudge the Malaysians for desiring to rid themselves of illegal immigrants. They have every right to do so.
Illegal immigrants pay no taxes, deprive their citizens of jobs, and are wont to break other laws just to avoid deportation.
Malaysia's wealth is also being dissipated by the presence of so many illegal workers and the strain is something they need not put up with.
We can, however, expect or even demand that their method of deporting the unwanted immigrants follow certain rules of conduct. For one, they must do so in a manner that does not endanger lives.
A few days ago, 13 babies and children of several Filipinos deported from Malaysia died, the cause of death generally believed to be dehydration. The Malaysians must take full responsibility for their deaths.
We are fully aware that Filipinos in the tens of thousands went to Malaysia in search of the proverbial greener pastures. It is sad that they had to leave their homeland in the belief that there was little, if any, hope for them here.
