The possible repeal of the death penalty may boost the government's bid to have American Rod Strunk extradited to the Philippines for the murder of his wife Nida Blanca.
National Bureau of Investigation Director Reynaldo Wycoco said this may clear the legal hurdle to extradition involving offenses punishable by death.
"Our job is to file an extradition request for Strunk. And who knows, by that time the death penalty could already be lifted. We'll cross that bridge when we get there. Once there is probable cause, we'll file a request for his extradition," Wycoco told reporters before leaving for Australia on a one-week trip.
But if the law is not repealed early enough, he said, the Philippine government would have to rely on processes provided for by the RP-US extradition treaty.
