Between 1875 and 1889, Baron Ferdinand Rothschild (1839-1898) built his country house, Waddesdon Manor, in the style of a French chateau set in the middle of' Buckinghamshire, England. Designed by the French architect Gabriel Hippolyte Destailleur (1822-1893), it was equipped with the most up-to-date facilities, astonishing in comparison with even the most comfortable town houses of the time and exceptional for the average English ancestral home. So much sybaritic luxury was considered by the neighboring estate owners to be distinctly nouveau riche.

Waddesdon Manor was more easily comparable to a Ritz Hotel set in the countryside than to any traditional English ...
