There is considerable debate among textile historians as to where velvet was first woven. For many years it was thought that it originated in the Middle East. However, in 1972, among the many objects found in what is known as Tomb Number One in Changsha, China, the resting place of a woman who died in 168 B.C., there was a fragment of a precursor of velvet. This discovery tipped the debate in favor of China as the originator of velvet. The question is still unresolved, but it is known that brocade, silk, and velvet were among the most costly items traded along the Silk Road, which brought the West into contact with places as remote as Xian, China, fourteen hundred years ago. An exhibition that examines velvet through examples made from the fifteenth to the early twentieth century opens at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum ...
