CANBERRA, Sept 2 Asia Pulse - New plans to overhaul medical negligence laws will mean that doctors could only be sued within three years and people injured in risky sports could be blocked from suing for negligence.
Assistant Treasurer Helen Coonan today releases the first report of the federal government's negligence review panel, set up to wind back increasingly huge lump-sum payouts.
Some doctors and recreational service providers have been forced out of business by the spiralling public liability insurance premiums.
The panel suggests doctors accused of medical negligence be reviewed by their peers and if their procedures are deemed reasonable, patients prevented from bringing lawsuits.
"What these proposals suggest is that a significant body of medical opinion ought to be able to tell one way or another without having to go through a court case that might come up in 25 years' time ... ," Senator Coonan told ABC Radio.
