MELBOURNE, Sept 2 Asia Pulse - The Australian stock market opened down today after a sluggish week on the United States market.
The local market had been expected to get off to a sluggish or directionless start given a public holiday in the US and the Reserve Bank of Australia's board meeting on interest rates this week.
The market moved between positive and negative territory, with the banks mixed, major resources stocks down, media giant News Corp up and Telstra down.
At 1009 AEST, the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index was 5.6 points lower at 3114.5, while the all ordinaries index lost 5.6 points to 3068.
