On the 10th anniversary of Sharp's Viewcam line of camcorders, the company has announced three new models, including the new VL-NZ100U digital camcorder. It is affordable ($699.95 MSRP), captures good-looking video with accurate color, and is very easy to operate. Very lightweight and small, one can easily tuck the NZ100U into a purse or a large pocket.
This compact Digital Video (DV) camcorder is a Combo-Cam that provides both DV and digital still recording modes. Like the Viewcams of old, the LCD viewfinder, battery and tape movement components are built into the camera body.
There is no flip-out LCD viewscreen. Instead, the lens, zoom and most of the camera controls are in the right-hand side camcorder module that swivels 270 degrees. This allows you to shoot from a variety of positions, as well as swing the LCD all the way around so that you can shoot a video of yourself.
Sharp ViewCam camcorders have always been unique in that they were designed for use with two hands. Instead of being held up to the eye, the recommended position is down around the tummy or chest with the camera assembly swiveled forward and the LCD screen aimed up at your eye.
This shooting position might feel a bit different, but after a few minutes, you realize how easy and natural it is to shoot that way. Of course, since the lens module can swivel, you can also shoot with the camera held above your head, down at your feet, or even in the standard in-front-of-your-face position.
