NEW CUMBERLAND, Pa. -- On behalf of Pennsylvania Gov. Mark Schweiker, state Physician General Dr. Rob Muscalus, Department of Health Secretary Robert S. Zimmerman Jr., Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Secretary David E. Hess, and Department of Agriculture Secretary Samuel Hayes today reaffirmed that Pennsylvania's battle against West Nile Virus continues on all fronts, including enhanced monitoring, prevention and quick response to suspected and confirmed cases of the disease in animals.
In doing so, the Schweiker Administration reassured residents that health risks associated with West Nile Virus are low for most people, and urged all residents to become actively involved with front-line prevention efforts.
"There have been positive bird and mosquito cases of West Nile Virus in Pennsylvania, so it is important for people to take reasonable measures to prevent mosquito bites and to eliminate places where mosquitoes can breed," Dr. Muscalus said.
