It was 1989, shortly after the fall of the Wall, and I was a just a young Filipino American drawn to the underground culture and intensity of Berlin. I had taken to hanging out with Kurdish and Turkish friends while in Germany. I found their easygoing attitude and humorous outlook refreshing and oddly familiar. They were not unlike the African American and Latino friends I had grown up with hack home.
