Many drug legalization proponents believe that marijuana causes few social problems. Nevertheless, significant medical questions remain, such as whether heavy, frequent, or prolonged use of cannabis leads to any lasting deterioration in mental functioning. Given that over 7 million Americans use marijuana on a weekly basis, this is an important public health issue.
Solowij and her colleagues in a variety of American and Australian universities and hospitals put together a retrospective study of 102 Americans who were near-daily users of marijuana.
Half of them had used the drug for an average of 24 years, while the other half had used the drug for an average of ten years. A control group had never used the drug.
