John Gotti, a racketeer, murderer, and former head of the Gambino crime family, died in federal prison on June 10. Gotti's quick wit, fancy clothes, and swagger captivated New York in the 1980s and early '90s as he beat the rap three times. He was right out of central casting.
The "Dapper Don" was waked in an elaborate coffin, surrounded by gaudy floral arrangements representing his passions: horse racing, cigars, poker, and the New York Yankees. David Letterman could have had a field day with Top Ten other Gotti funeral wreaths.
Because of his infamous life, the Capo di tutti capi was denied a funeral by the Catholic Church. But Gotti's infamy never seemed to dawn much on his "family" or the multitude of admirers who showed up at his tacky funeral procession.
