Burglars have attempted to break into the home of Stanley and Helen Morawski in Des Moines, Iowa, so often that Mrs. Morawski has expressed embarrassment at having to call police so often. Neighborhood thugs may have second thoughts in the future, however, due to the events of June 20th.
At about 4:20 a.m. that morning, Mr. Morawski, 76, noticed a number of suspicious persons approaching the house. This time, he loaded his shotgun with birdshot and waited.
According to a police report, "Two suspects stayed under the victim's [sic] pickup truck, while two others were attempting to gain entry into the house." At some point, one of the prowlers tapped on a window with a handgun. Mr. Morawski told police that when he saw the gun, he fired pointblank out the window. Someone screamed, and the would-be burglars disappeared.
