Michael Pinney of Bridgewater, Massachusetts, and Larry Quinn of Plymouth, have been friends since high school. Pinney, 33, tests air for an asbestos removal company, while Quinn, 35, recently started a landscaping business.
Since high school, the two have had a running joke speculating about what they would do should they win a lottery. Whatever it might be, they casually agreed to split the winnings.
A few years ago, as Michael and wife Anne-Marie were preparing to wed, he won the modest sum of $50,000 in the state lottery. Under the terms of their unwritten agreement, he offered one-half of the largesse to his longtime friend. Quinn, however, told him to keep it, insisting with a smile that there was no deal unless his share totaled at least $1 million.
On a whim, Pinney bought two more lottery tickets in early July of this year. When the winning numbers were posted, he promptly called Quinn to report that "We" had "just ...
