Chamberlain Academy is a school for troubled children in Chamberlain, South Dakota. At about 11:30 p.m. on June 26th, Pete Paul Fast Horse, 16, and Jeremy Feltman 15, broke a window at the academy, escaped, then embarked on a 12-hour vehicle theft spree.

According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, they first stole a Chevrolet Beretta in Chamberlain and headed for Sioux Falls (Feltman's hometown). Abandoning the Beretta, they stole a Chevy Cavalier and a Ford Explorer, which they abandoned in a rural Todd County farmyard where they then swiped a four-wheel-drive Ford owned by Calvin Collins. With Fast Horse at the wheel and Feltman sitting on the tailgate, they sped through an intersection and crashed into an embankment, destroying the vehicle. The youths then fled on foot toward the tiny town of Wood (population 73), Fast Horse's hometown.

Sena Lauritsen, 55, was at her rural home southwest of Wood with a family visiting from Seattle when her neighbor Mr. Collins called to warn her that the juveniles were headed her way. Lauritsen and her guests had planned to go swimming, but instead, Lauritsen retrieved the keys she had left in her old Cadillac, locked the doors to the home, and went to an upstairs bedroom where a window provided a good view of the area.
