Recollections of a Bleeding Heart: Paul Keating PM, by Don Watson; Knopf Australia (Random House), 2002, $45.

DON WATSON thinks that Paul Keating is Australia's greatest prime minister. He said so in an address to the Press Club on 29th March. The basis of his claim is Keating's role as an economic reformer, the establishment of APEC, Keating's support for the arts, and the native title legislation.

Bob Hawke (in The Hawke Memoirs, 1994) has a different view of Keating. He is savage about Keating's capacity to mythologise his role in government:
