WE WITNESS, almost every day, behaviour whereby the mechanisms of debate, tolerance and liberalism in our societies are used to subvert these very qualities. We tend to think in conventional terms such as right v left, authoritarian v democratic, conservative v liberal, and so on, and are thrown by paradoxical moves and displays of chutzpah manoeuvring. The proto-totalitarian personality has outlived the demise of communism, and is now alive and abroad, a forma mentis unconnected with any specific ideology--its aim is power and domination.
