SIR: I enjoyed the suggestion in Paul Monk's article (May 2002) that we should all help China to grow up and accept that Taiwan is an independent nation.
I understand, however, that far from being funded by $2 million from Beijing, the "Reunification" conference (theoretically organised by the Australian Council for the Promotion of Peaceful Reunification in China) held in Sydney from 21st to 23rd March, was a vehicle for extorting money from the Australian Chinese community for the Chinese Communist Party. Chinese Australian businessmen, some merely Australian residents, but some who are Australian citizens, had to make substantial contributions with a minimum of $100,000, but with much larger sums expected. Thus, although some seed money may have initially passed from Beijing to Sydney, a much larger net transfer flowed in the opposite direction.
