SYDNEY, Aug 1 Asia Pulse - Optus will next month launch a new mobile multimedia messaging service (MMS) aimed at helping it quadruple the revenue impact of data messaging by 2005.
Optus' main rival Telstra Corp Ltd (ASX:TLS) also announced plans to introduce the latest development in mobile technology.
Customers of Australia's number two telco, Optus, will be able to send colour picture and audio messages through specially equipped mobile phones for a fixed rate of 75 cents per message.
Telstra spokesman Chris Newlan said the price structure of Telstra's MMS service would be determined following feedback from the first customers using MMS.
Telstra's MMS service will be trialled by 120 of its mobile customers for free from next week until October.
The new offering by Optus comes after its parent Singapore Telecommunications Ltd last month revealed it had shelved the construction of its state-of-the-art 3G network because of a lack of suitable handsets.
Optus Mobile managing director Allen Lew said research had found significant numbers of mobile users were still waiting for more user-friendly, technologically advanced offerings.
