Three adults and two children were in a 17-foot boat on Lake Delta in Rome, New York, on June 28, 2001, when the boat's engine suddenly stalled. During attempts to restart it, the current began drawing the craft toward the spillway of a dam with a 60-foot drop to the river below.
From a quarter-mile away, 27-year-old Robert B. Keane of Rome, and friend David M. Cirasuolo, 34, of New York Mills, noticed the plight of the disabled vessel from Keane's 18-foot vessel. As they sped to render assistance, the five distraught passengers on the disabled boat jumped into the lake. Keane and Cirasuolo rescued the two children, but two of the adults clung to the crippled boat, lodged against the spillway.
