On May 2 1st, 11 seniors at Central Catholic High School in Toledo, Ohio, were eating lunch in the school's parking lot when, at about 1:15 p.m., they heard someone yell, "That guy just robbed the bank." A branch of the National City Bank was across the street from the school. One of the youths, 19-year-old Michael Pleitz, later recalled for the May 23rd Thiedo Blade, "We just all jumped into our cars. We wanted to just go out there and help."
Apparently, when the getaway driver for the robber realized what the youths had in mind, she sped off, leaving her accomplice stranded. The students tried, unsuccessfully, to block the path of the her Ford Expedition. When the alleged bank robber, Eric D. Davis, 30, found himself on foot, he commandeered a nearby vehicle by jumping in and ordering the driver and a passenger to flee. He was unaware that it was an unmarked police vehicle driven by Toledo Police Officer Anthony Duncan. The passenger, Ray O'Rourke, was also a city employee.
