On July 8th, African heads of state gathered in Durban, South Africa, to create the new African Union (AU), a pan-African organization modeled after the European Union and designed to achieve the same outcome. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, a native of Ghana, also attended the event. "To build a successful union in such conditions will require great stamina and iron political will, combined with readiness to accept a seemingly endless series of negotiations and compromises," Annan told the assembled dignitaries. For years, Annan has encouraged the United Nations and the European Union to chip away at the sovereignty of the nations of Europe. For decades, the public was assured that the EU (which started life as the Common Market) was only a free-trade organization.
