The disproportion of the Annolied that has long preoccupied scholarship (a lengthy general historia followed by a relatively Short vita of the saint) also characterizes the book under review, in which the first 250 pages are devoted to a survey of past scholarship, with new ground being broken only in the last quarter or so of the whole.
