Over the years, the Bank of New York, the nation's oldest bank, has been forced to abandon its downtown offices three times: in 1799, because of a yellow-fever epidemic; in 1835, because of a great fire; and last September, because of the attack on the World Trade Center. On September 11th, the collapse of Seven World Trade knocked out sixteen hundred windows on the south side of the company's technical and operations center, across the street at 101 Barclay, forcing about four thousand employees to relocate to Pleasantville, New York, and other locations.
