Covering the Idaho State Republican Convention for the state's largest and most influential newspaper, the liberal Idaho Statesman, Gregory Hahn completely glossed over the mid-June adoption of a resolution calling for U.S. withdrawal from the UN. After mentioning a single exception dealing with a statewide redistricting resolution, Hahn casually reported: "The rest of the proposals that the resolutions committee supported were passed without debate." The most important of those resolutions stated:
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Idaho State Republican Party ... respectfully but firmly requests all Members of Congress to use appropriate constitutional authority in order to extricate our nation from the threat to freedom posed by the United Nations. We encourage House members to work toward this goal by co-sponsoring H.R. 1146, the American Sovereignty Restoration Act. We encourage members of the Senate to introduce a similar measure in their legislative branch.
That it was "passed without debate" in no way means that there were no hurdles to overcome in order to have Idaho's GOPers back this measure. The first potential problem was that different delegates, unbeknownst to each other, introduced separate anti-UN resolutions, thereby creating an opportunity for pro-UN partisans to split the anti-UN conventioneers into competing factions. Had that situation prevailed, neither Get US out! measure would likely have received sufficient backing.
In a clear demonstration of teamwork rather than the self-serving stubbornness found at most political gatherings, delegate Katherine Frazier readily agreed to withdraw her Get US out! proposal in favor of the above resolution submitted by delegates George Detweiler and Chris Harriman.
Next, the resolutions committee needed to approve the matter. Mr. Detweiler gave a logical, low-key presentation that affected in a positive way some of the committee members. He simply listed reasons why the UN "should be considered as diametrically opposed to everything America stands for." Those reasons included the choice of living under the U.S. Constitution or the UN Charter, and the obvious stark differences between the American system recognizing God as the source of rights versus the UN system where God is never mentioned and rights are threatened. He capped off his remarks by informing committee members that the UN's new International Criminal Court does not recognize numerous God-given rights protected by the Bill of Rights.
