According to biblical sources, she led a caravan laden with gold, spices, and precious stones to visit King Solomon I of Judah--an early trade mission according to some interpretations.

The first scientific expedition was a Danish mission that landed on the coast of Yemen in 1762. During the nineteenth century there were two scholarly expeditions, but archaeological exploration did not really begin until after World War I.
