PUNE: In 1995-96, the Pune municipal corporation received the honour of becoming the first and only municipal corporation in the state to prepare an environment status report for the city.
Seven years down the line, the city has acquired the dubious distinction of being the most polluted city in the state.
The reason: Several measures recommended in that report have not been executed even today. All six environment status reports prepared by the PMC to date have underscored that vehicular pollution contributes 70 per cent of the city's air pollution.
In spite of this, the civic body has not improved the public transport system in the city. No efforts have been made to revitalise the Pune municipal transport. This despite 150 out of 800 buses in the PMT's fleet becoming outdated.
For the last several years, talks are on to introduce mini-buses in core city areas. However, the move, which would have helped curb traffic congestion and reduce air pollution, is yet to be implemented on a large scale.
