: The Supreme Court judgment of 1997 rules that every workplace is expected to set up a complaints committee to inquire into cases of sexual harassment against women.
With practically no tangible outcome of this ruling, the Bar Council of India (BCI) has now directed every state bar council to constitute committees to inquire into such cases.
The direction has been initiated by the National Commission for Women (NCW), which now attempts to further the implementation of the Supreme court guidelines and also to assess the extent to which the guidelines have been implemented.
While it is said that only a handful of organisations have set up committees to inquire into complaints of sexual harassment, committees which will now be set up by the bar councils are expected to ensure that SC ruling is not violated henceforth.
