: Since Reliance chairman Dhirubhai Ambani had his first stroke in the mid-80s, significant advances have been made in the treatment of strokes. Earlier, doctors had little to offer to stroke victims except rehabilitation after the damage had been done.
In 1996 came TPA or tissue plasminogen activator, the genetically engineered drug that revolutionised the treatment of blocked vessels in what is known as ischaemic stroke. TPA whichs dissolves clots promptly has to be administered within three hours of the onset of the stroke.
