LETTERS MAY BE LOVE LETTERS I often ask my postman Gerry if there are any love letters in the bunch he hands me through the gate--he always says, "Not today", so I holler at him that there's nothing here but bills and ads, and he says, "Next time!" Now the United States Postal Service is ruining it all for me, without coming out and actually saying anthrax, they're suggesting all kinds of reasons we shouldn't open our mail, maybe should treat it like a poisonous snake: If, for example, the letter is unexpected or from someone you don't know, we should suspect it. By this criteria, these could include declarations of love, acceptance of a poem by the New Yorker, news that your last year's income tax is scheduled for an audit next month, your first piece of fan mail, or a chain letter that results in catastrophe when broken.
