AS I WRITE THIS, we are beginning yet another inquiry/report into higher education. Murray, Martin, Williams, Dawkins, Hoare, West, yawn, shudder. However, this time there is something a little different on the agenda of the minister, Brendan Nelson. There--among the unsurprising concerns about access, efficiency (yes, there are far too many self-indulgent courses with negligible student populations and far too large a "bureaucracy), diversity (the new motherhood!), financing, hoping for miracles (particularly from ICT), employment practices, holding on to regional seats, and the rest--is an unmistakable concern that Australia needs excellence in some of its universities.
