CONTEMPORARY museums give off an odour of the death of art. Even the contemporary section of the Vatican Museum induces the feeling that something has gone terribly wrong since Raphael and Michelangelo. The more avant garde museums become, the greater the travesty of art seems to be. In his newly published history of iconoclasm in Western art, The Forbidden Image, Alain Besancon writes of the Paris Biennial. There were "rooms capriciously strewn with debris, little piles of sand, roaring machines, charred objects, the macabre remains from some death camp, obstetrical objects to turn your stomach, a neon tube in a corner".
