SIR: During an informative article on Karl Popper (May 2002), Rafe Champion made one strange error that ought to be corrected. Champion, following Malachi Hacohen, whose book he was reviewing, claimed that Ernst Mach had an influence on Lenin. This is only true in the sense that the Prophets of Baal had an influence on Elijah or Voltaire on William Blake.

Lenin was so opposed to the logical positivism of Mach and the Vienna Circle that he alarmed his Bolshevik colleagues by giving up most of his political work for several months in other to refute it. Lenin feared that Mach's reliance on "sensation" to establish the reality of the external world would lead to new forms of "idealism" and religious beliefs. Although Lenin's politics were very different from those of Samuel Johnson, he shared the Sage's view that "striking his foot with mighty force against a large stone, till he rebounded from it" was adequate refutation of Bishop Berkeley and the scepticism Mach derived from David Hume.
