: Uncertainty over the much-hyped Elevated Rail Transport System (ELRTS), which failed to take off the drawing board, ended on Thursday, with Chief Minister S.M. Krishna stating the project has been shelved.
``ELRTS is economically unviable. It will only be ornamental and cannot reach all parts of Bangalore,'' he told reporters here.
Krishna said his government decided to abandon the project after a careful study in 2000. The decision had also been communicated to the Bangalore Mass Rapid Transit Limited (BMRTL), the nodal agency, for executing it.
As an alternative, the goverment had suggested to the BMRTL to explore the possibilities of metro rail and introducing dedicated lines for operating Volvo buses.
