MANGALORE: With the recent amendment to the Cable TV Act, the days of exploitation by cable operators in Mangalore are over. That's what Narendra Nayak, convener, Conumers' Education Trust (CET), Mangalore, believes.

Nayak said the recent amendment has put a major block in the operations of the cable operator mafia, who will be regulated as far as the number of connections, fees to be collected and channels to be aired, among other things, are concerned.

Nayak maintains that with set-top boxes being made compulsory, it is possible to not only keep a tag on the number of connections an operator has, but also allow the consumer to pay according to his viewing habits rather than pay for a cluster of channels he does not view.

He claimed that so far, the modus operandi of the operators had been to show only 10 per cent of the connections to channel networks, while increasing amounts were collected from the consumers whenever a pay channel hiked the cost.
