: The ball is now firmly in President K R Narayanan's court on contesting for a second term, but his backers still hope to make a contest of it. The key: swing the allies.
Confabulations have begun in the political circles after Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee rejected a second term for K R Narayanan.
Much of the Congress-led Opposition has put its might behind Narayanan's candidature and the President himself is not averse to it.
He has, however, indicated that he will not join the fray unless there is consensus or his winning a contest is assured.
Although the NDA has an edge in numbers in the electoral college, a few big allies is all it will take to tilt the balance.
Hectic efforts are now on to rope in fence-sitters among the NDA allies on the plea that the nation requires anything but a contest on leadership at a time when a united face is needed before the rest of the world.
