: There will be no second term for President K R Narayanan, at least so far as the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is concerned.
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Thursday conveyed this to the President during his 45 minute one-to-one meeting at Rashtrapati Bhavan, highly-placed sources said.
The move comes as a rebuff to the Opposition which has been insisting upon Narayanan being given a second term. The President reportedly had thanked Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who met him earlier this week to enquire whether he would be willing to contest an election, and had stated that he had an "open mind" on the subject.
According to sources, Vajpayee, who met Narayanan to discuss the border situation, told him that it was the ''considered view'' within the NDA that the ''convention'' of the President not being given a second term should be followed.
The last President to serve two terms was Rajendra Prasad.
