Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) - Former South African cricket captain Hansie Cronje, who stunned the sporting world two years ago when he admitted accepting money from bookmakers, died Saturday in plane crash in the Western Cape.
Sports minister Ngconde Balfour confirmed his death and expressed his shock.
It appears Cronje was flying on a light aircraft with a pilot and another crewmember from Bloemfontein to George when the aircraft flew into bad weather.
The plane was unable to land and while circling near the George Airport, it crashed into a mountain at about 3am (GMT).
A massive rescue operation was launched soon afterwards, but severe weather conditions prevented anyone reaching the crash site until late on Saturday afternoon.
Cronje was regarded as one of the leading players of his generation and led the post-apartheid national cricket side to numerous successes.
