Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (PANA) - A grouping of prominent international and local NGOs in Tanzania Friday joined forces with the government to combat the proliferation and illicit trafficking of small arms and light weapons in a nation faced with rising incidents of violent crime.
The NGOs agreed to get on board in a rearguard battle against a rising social problem as the first phase of activities in a national plan of action against small arms proliferation involving the civil society gets underway.
Actions recommended by the grouping include revitalisation of village security committees and dissemination of information relating to firearm laws and on arms control in general.
But the NGOs, in particular, want to see clear crime prevention strategy in Tanzania that includes improved city design, communications and infrastructure and the generation of work opportunities for people at risk of becoming weapon-totting criminals.
Key recommendations in this regard include prioritisation of poverty alleviation initiatives and the promotion of economic investment nationally and at the village level.
"This could be encouraged through a system of micro-financing of community operators wishing to commence micro-enterprises," the organisations said in a communique.
The grouping also urged the government to create a "comprehensive" partnership plan to improve economic alternatives for the people of Tanzania, including employment creation and ensuring revenue sharing across all levels of the society.
