TSHWETE MEMORIAL SERVICE ON THURSDAY.
(LEADS TO ADD THAT JACKIE SELEBI WILL ACCOMPANY THE BODY) Hundreds of people are expected to attend countrywide memorial services on Thursday for Safety and Security Minister Steve Tshwete who died unexpectedly last week. The official service will be held at Pilditch Stadium, Pretoria West at noon and will be attended by Cabinet members and President Thabo Mbeki. It was originally scheduled to take place at the Pretoria City Hall, but the venue had since been changed to Pilditch Stadium, the presidency said on Wednesday. The African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal will hold another service at the Durban City Hall at 4pm on Thursday which will be addressed by provincial ANC chairman S'bu Ndebele. Eastern Cape premier Makhenkesi Stofile will be the main speaker at a service in the East London City Hall, while in Cape Town, National Assembly Speaker Dr Frene Ginwala will speak at a memorial service in St George's Cathedral. A night vigil, to be addressed by Deputy President Jacob Zuma, will be held on Friday evening at the Victoria Stadium in King William's Town. Tshwete died of post-operative pneumonia on Friday night at 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria, where he was being treated for a back ailment. On Monday, mourners at his send-off service hailed him as "the son of the soil" who led the fight against crime and against apartheid with distinction. His body, which will be accompanied by national police commissioner Jackie Selebi and three deputies, will be flown to King William's Town on Thursday, ahead of Saturday's official funeral at Bisho Stadium, the Eastern Cape ANC said on Wednesday.
