A committee seeking the release of what it calls bona fide liberation movement cadres still in South African jails is demanding the dropping of murder, arson and terrorism charges against a former Azanian People's Liberation Army (Apla) commander. Former Apla operations director Letlapa Mphahlele will appear in the Bloemfontein Regional Court on Friday in connection with charges ranging from murder and attempted murder to arson and terrorism. Mphahlele is presently free on R30000 bail. He has consistently argued for blanket amnesty for all freedom fighters and refused to apply for amnesty before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The former Apla leader also accepted responsibility for all actions carried out by his subordinates.
