A Western Cape project aimed at improving relations between farmers and farmworkers should be emulated in the rest of the country where there were high levels of farm attacks, New National Party leader Marthinus van Schalkwyk said on Wednesday. Addressing a Workers' Day rally in Paarl attended mostly by farmworkers, he said the time of "baas and klaas" (master and servant) was gone forever. "Never again must farmworkers become second-class citizens. The key to agricultural success in our country is for farmers and farmworkers to respect each other as vital partners in growth." Respect between farmers and workers was widespread in the Western Cape, Van Schalkwyk said. He congratulated organised agriculture and the agriculture department in the province for pioneering initiatives to improve farmer and farmworker relations. This included the ground-breaking code of conduct launched last year, which committed Agri-Western Cape's 4000 members to empowering workers, eliminating the 'dop' system, supporting a broad process of land reform, and promoting partnerships with new and emerging farmers. ...
