Lagos, Nigeria (PANA) - Workers in Nigeria's northern Yobe state have boycotted the 2002 May Day celebrations to protest alleged "glaring gross mismanagement, misappropriation and embezzlement of state resources" by the state government officials.
Nigerian workers joined their counterparts around the world to mark the day, which was declared a public holiday by the federal government.
Workers in Abuja, the seat of the federal government, converged at a huge rally organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the umbrella group for the nation's workers, in the city.
President Olusegun Obasanjo and other top government officials attended the ceremonies.
But in an action widely believed to be unprecedented in the country, Yobe State workers stayed at home for what they called "sober reflections".
