Nairobi, Kenya (PANA) - Heavy rains in Kenya have left villagers in Meru, 200 km from the capital Nairobi, in mourning after a mudslide in the area was feared to have killed 10 people as the weatherman warned Kenyans to brace for more deluge.
The entire district security team was at the scene in Nkubu village, where eight homes and 12 people were buried in a landslide. Police managed to recover six bodies as rescuers were still working round the clock in search of survivors.
Information reaching PANA in Nairobi indicated that the local district commissioner, police chiefs and medical personnel, have camped on the scene as heavy rains continued to wreak havoc throughout the country.
"All our bosses are at the scene and we still do not know when the operation will wind up," a police officer at Nkubu Police Station told PANA by telephone.
The incident followed two days of heavy rainfall.
Information indicates that five homes were the first ones to be buried while the other three followed as villagers went to the rescue of the first victims.
In the meantime, the weatherman warned that the lull experienced Wednesday was just but a short respite from the rains.
