Paris, France (PANA) - Labour Day was overshadowed in France Wednesday by demonstrations organised by groups opposed to the policies of French far-right politician Jean-Marie Le Pen.
Associations defending African immigrant workers' rights in France, joined thousands of French citizens across the country in the protests against Le Pen, who is facing incumbent President Jacques Chirac in Sunday's second round presidential ballot.
"While Le Pen promises to expel immigrants, he forgets that the very same immigrants contribute through taxes to the economy of France," Sidi Tidiane Gueye, President of the Federation of African workers in France (FETAF) told PANA.
He said he called on African workers to join their French counterparts in the demonstrations to denounce threatens to French democratic values.
"Our responsibility is to bring our support to these demonstrations to ensure May 1 (Labour Day) becomes a day of liberation for African workers in France as well as ensure that French ideals of liberty, fraternity and solidarity triumph over anti-immigration policies of Le Pen," Gueye added.
