Blantyre, Malawi (PANA) - Sudi Adak Sulaimana, who was in March cleared of treason charges, is suing the Malawi Government for millions of kwacha for wrongful detention.
Sulaimana, alongside three others, were arrested in March 2001 for allegedly plotting to overthrow the government of President Bakili Muluzi.
After languishing in jail for a year, Malawi's top state prosecutor, Director of Prosecutions Fahad Assani, dropped the charges against them, saying the coup plotters were not serious about their intentions.
But Sulaimana's lawyer, Fabiano Mzumara, told PANA Wednesday he was suing the state for false imprisonment. He said Sulaimana was asking for a total of six million kwacha (80,000 US dollars) in damages for false imprisonment, malicious prosecution, defamation and loss of earnings.
The second accused, former security guard Colvin Kaumira, is also suing for four million kwacha (53,000 US dollars) for similar reasons.
