Saint Denis, Reunion (PANA) - After Jean-Marie Le Pen's surprise showing in the first round of French presidential poll, some 6,000 people demonstrated in Reunion on May Day, Wednesday, against "racism and colonialism".
The demonstration called by Reunion's General Workers Federation (CGTR), the leading trade union on the island, brought together many participants against "racism, xenophobia and intolerance".
The federation in the French administered territory urged voters to cast their ballots for incumbent Jacques Chirac in the 5 May second round presidential poll.
"We are not urging voters to elect a man or his ideas, but stop a party that is advocating hatred of the others," the federation officials said.
