Rabat, Morocco (PANA) - The Security Council has extended till June 30, the mandate of the UN mission for the organisation of a referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), the Moroccan State Television TVM, reported Wednesday.
Western Sahara is a former Spanish colony under dispute for the past 26 years, between Morocco and the Algeria-backed Polisario Front.
After the failure of all attempts to organise a self-determination referendum, the UN adopted a resolution encouraging the two parties to dialogue on a plan providing for the autonomy of Western Sahara.
The "Baker Plan" named after the former American Secretary of State who proposed it, provides for an autonomy of the territory, but under the sovereignty of Morocco.
The territory's estimated 300,000 population, many of whom live in the refugee camps of Tindouf (South Algeria), would be expected to elect local bodies, according to the new Plan.
