Algiers, Algeria (PANA) - Fourteen inmates were reported dead and 11 others injured in a fire that gutted a wing of the Serkadji prison in Algiers Tuesday night, an official said Wednesday in the Algerian capital.

The blaze was reportedly caused by a 19-year-old detainee, who attempted to commit suicide, the official said, adding that despite swift intervention by the prison wardens and the civil protection unit, the fire rapidly spread to other parts of the prison.
