Bamako, Mali (PANA) - The Malian tourist sector hopes to create 6,000 jobs and to record 250,000 new hotel check-ins that will earn it 100 billion CFA by 2010, Malian Craftsmanship Minister Zakiatou Walet Halatine has said.
Halatine said this during a meeting recently held in Bamako to assess the 2001-2002 tourist season and the preparation of the next one.
During the 2001-2002 season, the Malian Office of Tourism and Hotels (OMATHO), a public administrative organisation in charge of implementing government policy on tourism and accommodation, reinforced its intervention capacities through the opening of new regional offices in Bamako, Kayes (West), Sikasso (South), Segou (Centre), Gao and Kidal (North), Timbuktu and Mopti (North) which are areas highly frequented by tourists. According to OMATHO officials, the organisation of the CAN 2002 allowed businessmen in the hotel sector to enjoy such advantages as tax and custom exemptions valued at 4.2 billion CFA.
