HANOI, July 1 Asia Pulse - The city of Da Nang plans to become Vietnam's central economic hub for transport and education by 2020 through a newly-approved development master plan.
The plan sees Da Nang becoming central Vietnam's most significant city, with a population of 770,000 by 2005 and 1.2 million by 2020, serving as a centre for the domestic road and railway networks, regional tourism and international transport.
It will also be the focus of cultural, educational and sports activities for the whole central region and Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands).
Under the new plan, satellite cities and towns will be built up around Da Nang while the city itself will expand its districts toward the west, northwest, southwest and southeast, utilising areas of land which are vacant at present. The short term plan aims to set up a cluster of urban areas around the city.
In the city's northwest, development will take place in the areas between National Highway 1 and the Thuan Phuoc-Lien Chieu coastal road.
The inner districts of Hai Chau and Thanh Khe will form the city's Zone 1, or centre, an area of 3,000ha with a population of 370,000 people by 2002.
